Abstract:
Intellectual Property (IP) is a novel idea that is owned by the person or persons who created the idea. This is a “hands-on” workshop focused on technology IP. It builds on a basis of relevance both in the academic and commercial context. It also places technology IP in context of other forms of IP. The workshop is divided up into “learning” units followed by “doing” units so that there is an experiential component closely linked with the academic.
The goal of this workshop is to teach Quantum and Crypto students about IP, their specific rights as researchers and to figure out if they have protectable ideas or concepts. This workshop will give students skills such as how to use patent databases as a supplement to literature searches, allowing students to understand IP from a scientific level. This workshop will help set up the students to identify gaps in their research, understand how to take their research and leverage it into valuable IP that can be used in commercialization. This workshop will prepare for and lead into the entrepreneurship workshop that follows.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the basic definition of intellectual property and be able to identify and distinguish between the different types of intellectual property protection.
- Understand, define and provide examples of trademarks, patents, copyright and trade secret.
- Understand who owns different types of intellectual property in unique scenarios and the necessary steps in applying for intellectual property protection.
- Develop an Intellectual Property strategy for ideas, research and products
- Apply this new knowledge to future business ventures
